We can’t seem to help ourselves. We humans are driven by experience. Fresh encounters attract our attention. Bright, shiny objects get our attention like catnip. No doubt “new” stays the most attractive word in marketing, promising something new. Experimental marketing is not advisable. Shopping malls and supermarkets have changed their retail razzmatazz and interaction with consumers for years.
With E-commerce, the need to excel at consumer experience is growing rapidly and is more informative than ever. E-commerce delivers several online interactions, which have made consumers discerning- demanding more interactive interfaces, while wanting seamless buying experiences across all channels. How can we make the new generation of e-commerce customers happy within the competitive omni-channel marketplace? You could get to know them a little better and start creating the product to sell online, or you could create a user experience for your store. Design thinking: Understanding yourself, dealing with the problems you had no idea you had You will have to understand the customers need in order to make them happy. It means that you have to be the crossing guard at the intersection of the technology and humanity with design thinking. Before it becomes digital, the e-commerce approach becomes human. The aim is to comprehend the customer’s behavior in detail, to create empathy with the client you will be serving. The idea of creating products and services based on understanding the customers has been around for sometime as people have bought a few things, even though the phrase design thinking has come into vogue. We have a lot more data, sufficient analytics from search and shopping behaviors, which are done through artificial intelligence and machine learning to comprehend the customer’s choices of buying. The results are converted into personalized buying experiences using technologies like natural language searches and augmented, virtual and mixed reality. It is a way to interact with a generation that asks for control by experiencing what is more dynamic and interactive by default. Once the sellers can offer this personal experience, the complete experience of buying become s enjoyable and memorable for a long time. It converts the buyers into fans, influences and repeat customers. It underpins the success in commerce, online or offline business, business to consumers or consumers to consumers. To engage all this together and convert it into e-commerce interactions that consumer embrace, there are a few steps of e-commerce design thinking. Understand the customers, by doing a bit of homework and understanding their motivations and behaviors. Get under their skins without any judgments. Discern and consider, but don’t underestimate them. Defining needs Put your findings together and come to a conclusion. What drives their behavior? What are the problems they are trying to solve? Are they using features meant for some other purpose as the real ones are not in existence? This is called opportunity. Brainstorm Come up with a few ideas, no holding back, work around the conclusions you developed in the earlier stages. Simply remember the 3 B’s: Brainstorm, blend and build. Work without any self consciousness. Every idea is welcome. Let them awe you to see the bigger picture. Prototype Score and rank the idea you like and create them. Design a few of your favorite concepts to put in front of people. It doesn’t need to be the complete product. It can be what developers call a basic viable product, like a piece of simple representation. Test Go back and test your audience to get a reaction out of them. Does this solve the identified problems? Why or why not? How, dear user, can you improve it? Is this the perfect solution on the lookout for a customer? Implement This takes a lot of courage- taking ideas after research and deploying it. This portion involves a lot of research as well. It is not until the page is live that we get to know of the good, bad and the ugly. There are a couple of questions you can ask your team to make e-commerce gentler:
